Best Way to Follow Up After Networking Events

Mar 19, 2026 · 6 min read · Cardify

Learn effective follow-up strategies to turn networking connections into real business opportunities — without being pushy or forgettable.

The 48-Hour Rule

The single most important rule in post-event follow-up: reach out within 48 hours. While the conversation is still fresh in both minds, a brief message has dramatically higher open and reply rates.

Your goal in this first message is not to sell — it’s to reconnect and remind. Reference something specific from your conversation to show you were genuinely listening.

Personalize Every Message

A generic “Great to meet you!” is instantly forgettable. Instead, write something like: “Loved your take on outbound automation at the roundtable — I’ve been testing a similar approach with cold email sequences.”

This demonstrates attentiveness and creates an immediate hook for continued conversation.

Choose the Right Channel

LinkedIn is ideal for B2B professional contacts. Email works best for formal introductions and longer follow-ups. Text or WhatsApp can work if you established a casual rapport in person — but only if they gave you their number willingly.

Provide Value First

If you mentioned an article, tool, or resource during your conversation — send it. This transforms your follow-up from self-serving to genuinely helpful. Helpful people get responses.

The 3-Touch Framework

  1. Touch 1 (Day 1–2): Personal reconnect message referencing your conversation.
  2. Touch 2 (Week 1–2): Share a relevant resource, article, or introduction.
  3. Touch 3 (Month 1): Check in with a low-pressure ask or update about something relevant to them.

After three touches with no response, move the contact to a low-priority nurture sequence. Never burn bridges — circumstances change.
